About Us
Ascent Church was planted in the fall of 2020 when a group of 33 adults with 16 kids were sent out from Clear River Church near Purdue University.
Our Story
Ascent Church is the fourth church plant out of Clear River Church in Lafayette, IN near Purdue University. In the summer of 2019, Zach Miller, our lead pastor, began to have a growing suspicion that God was asking him to hand over Clear River and plant a new church. After confirming this with other leaders at Clear River, God made it clear Blacksburg was to be the location of this new church. In the summer of 2020, a team of 33 adults and 16 kids picked up their lives and moved to the Blacksburg area and Ascent Church began public services on August 30, 2020 at the Custom Catering Center. After a few short months of meeting regularly, Custom Catering leased us the facility to meet full time. After 3 years of leasing, Ascent was given the opportunity to purchase the facility to help us become a permanent fixture in Blacksburg. God has been faithful and we look forward to what He will continue to do in and through Ascent Church.

Our Mission
Love God
In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus makes it clear that we are to love “the Lord our God” with all our heart, soul, and mind, and that we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. Loving God and loving people are THE primary marks of a Disciple of Jesus and it’s what we aim to help every Christian live out.
Make Disciples
He would later command his followers to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” (Matt. 28:19). Our main “job” as disciples of Jesus is to lead others to become what we’ve become. The message of Jesus crucified and risen from the dead and the love of God through us are what we bring to those around us.
Plant Churches
As we are saved by Jesus and transformed by his work in our lives, we need a mission to live and die for. The pattern of the Bible is that Christians took the message and love of Jesus around the world and local churches would spring up. Our vision for the future is that Ascent Church would one day send people out to do the same!
Our Beliefs
At the core of our beliefs is the good news of Jesus Christ—the wonderful truth that Jesus Christ was crucified and raised from the dead so that sinful people who trust in Jesus would be reconciled to God. This gospel is our PRIMARY passion and the driving influence in preaching, worship, small groups, prayer and church planting.
Ascent Church belongs to a network of churches that are unified in Bible beliefs, genuine friendship, and the shared purpose of making disciples and planting healthy, effective, relational local churches. We believe that true Christian unity only comes about by holding to the “whole counsel of God,” rather than simply trying to find a few things upon which we can agree. At the same time, we do not claim to be perfect in this affirmation of our beliefs. While they are communicated imperfectly, this document represents our best understanding of the teachings of the Bible and we believe these truths passionately. They are the grounds of our unity.
We hold to the absolute truth found in the Bible and, thus, we turn to the Bible on every area of what we believe, how we live, and how we participate in church life together. We believe that local churches are to be the primary means of inviting people to Jesus, making mature disciples, equipping people to serve, learning to worship, and planting new churches. All of this is done through local churches as is outlined in the Bible, so that people of all ages, cultures, and ethnicities will hear the gospel of Jesus Christ, being saved from their sins and reconciled to God.
Our Network
Ascent is a part of a small network of church-planting churches. Together, we are like-minded in doctrine and style, yet not a denomination. We are friends who support and encourage one another, start new churches, and follow Jesus together. It has been part of our mission in following Jesus to plant healthy, local churches in university cities throughout Virginia and beyond where people can come hear about Jesus in a clear, relevant way and learn what it means to follow Him and become His disciples.
